PANELS OF THE WEEK 9/14/16

ACTION COMICS:  Who/What is Clark Kent?

Written by Dan ‘the Man’ Jurgens with art by Patrick Zircher.

Did Mystery Clark who showed up in Action 957 know new 52 Lois Lane?  We never saw them meet on panel.  We were promised new 52 Lois would be Superwoman.  That lasted one issue and then she was dust.  So is this a clone with neuro programming or is this the Real new 52 Superman without his powers?

act963loisnothappy

The story Clark & Perry are talking about is last year’s DCYou storyline where Lois Lane was promoted as a betrayer of Superman’s dual identity.  New 52’s last nuclear blast at the Superman mythology.  And probably the reason for Rebirth.

act963loismove

Clark uses closing time as a distraction so he can enter GENETICRON.  With a name like that it must have to do with genetics and time.  Mystery CK seems to know new 52 Lois Lane pretty well.

I highly recommend BUYING Action Comics from 957 on.  Put it on your pull list.

For history buffs, see if you can find this 4 part arc by Maggin & Bates in the classic section of your LCS.  It begins with Superman v1 #296.

superman_296

Clark may be depowered while wearing the glasses but he has all the confidence of a super man.  He impresses Lois Lane & they have a dinner of beef bourguignon.  That’s right, it was in this arc where Lois and Clark’s code word for whoopie started.

NEW SUPER-MAN  Who is that wearing the S?

The Chinese Super-Man and his ‘Justice League’ counterparts are in as secret base under the sea.

nsmclamshell

nsmsinjail

nsmrealsupesmaybe

Is this the real new 52 Superman?  Or is this a red herring?  We know Grant Morrison’s Action stories stayed in the first year of the new 52.  The other #1’s jumped 5 years ahead.  Dr. Omen in this story has dealt with genetics.  Superwoman (not Lois) book mentioned Lex & Lena’s prisons were experimenting on villains.  It just gets curiouser and curiouser.

WONDER WOMAN YEAR ONE: The Beauty of WonderTrev

Greg Rucka is writing Diana’s origins in this storyline drawn by Nicola Scott.

wwwondertrevbeauty

Looks like a lot of understanding to me on a whole lot of levels.

ww6nakedtrevor

Did I mention the Amazons gave Steve his appendix back? Thanks, Nicola!

wwdianamugshot

In Rucka’s other storyline, THE LIES, we see Diana and Steve in the present.  The mystery of the mugshot is now solved in Wonder Woman #6.  Trevor carries this picture with him through the heat of battle.  Liam Sharp is responsible for the beauty of Diana and Steve in The Lies storyline.

Highly recommend you BUYING Wonder Woman.  Both storylines and art are (insert most fabulous word you can think of).

TITAN COMICS:  DOCTOR WHO THE THIRD DOCTOR: Bessie & Oh Shit!!!  **SPOILERS**

Paul Cornell’s first issue came out this week.  Jon Pertwee was my first Doctor Who.  Still is.  Some of you may be watching his son, Sean, as Alfred on GOTHAM.  I also loved Pertwee’s car, Bessie.

dwbessie

There were actually a few “Oh Shits!” in this first issue.  My son’s favorite Doctor showed up.  But what made me squee  the most —

dwrobertdelgado
Oh yea.  THE Master. The REAL one. YES YES YES!!!

Highly recommend this series.  Cornell has written some of the best Doctor Who television episodes.  He is a master.

Hope everyone had a good comic book week.  Hope there was something in some book that made you feel and wanting more.

This Saturday at 5pm EDT on talkshoe .Tej and I will be doing our G2FACTOR HARDCORE podcast.  We do reviews of comic books and DC movie news.  This week we’ll be doing Action Comics 963, Wonder Woman #6 with some other mentions.  Our PSR this week will be Superwoman #2.  A PSR is a Public Service Review for those people who won’t read the comic for their own mental health but want to know what’s going on.  We supply that service.

It May Be Time to Return to DC Comics

Act957 Real Supes

Geoff Johns has brought us DCU Rebirth.  Gathering together editors and creators so they are all on the same page attitude-wise.  Hope and inspiration.  Imagine that!  DC Comics has always been about HEROES.   Characters with full lives and deep layering of history, storylines and worlds.  Characters that inspire and give us hope.

To see what I’m talking about go read, better yet, purchase DCU Rebirth #1 which came out June 1st.  It is in its 3rd printing.  Something or someONE happened to the DC Universe and New 52 was ‘created.’  Now a character long gone from the DCU landscape returns to warn his friends/fellow heroes only to find they don’t remember him.  Even his closest loved ones.   A must read.  A must purchase.

LOSER IS DEAD

DCE killed off new 52 Superman.  Ironically, it was by a guy who had his solar flare power & he then became ash.  (Very reminiscent of the Sand Superman)  Solar flare – dumbest power ever since it made Loser vulnerable for ever extended periods of time.

Apparently Loser was not what he thought he was.  Fans could have told him that — and they did, by not buying his books.

But we all know how long a Superman stays dead.  Even though we called him Loser – no Superman should ever die while his ‘fans’ just shrug.  Hopefully they will redeem him.  There have been hints of that.

Could there have been a switch during the five year gap?   Is the Real new 52 Superman out there somewhere?

SUPERMAN REBIRTH #1

Written by Peter Tomasi, who also authored the fauxmance and the last 8 issues of Superbooks before Rebirth.  In this world there is Pre-Flashpoint Superman, his wife & Author X Lois Lane and their son, Jon Samuel Kent — The Kents are known as the Whites because this is new 52 Superman’s world, not theirs.  (How they came to the new 52 world is explained in Convergence Superman from a year ago.)

Now that Loser is dead, there is only one Superman alive.  BUT Tomasi had TWO Lois Lanes to write about.  New 52 and PF.  He didn’t write about either of them.  He wrote about PF Superman and new 52 Lana Lang.  Tomasi has had new 52 Lana suckerpunch new 52 Lois and had new 52 Wonder Woman wanting to be a reporter so she could be by Loser’s side.  Not to mention, but I will.  Tomasi had Loser contemplating giving WW Martha Kent’s diamond – fans will remember that it was PF Lois who received Martha Kent’s diamond when Clark proposed to her.  So completely ignoring any Lois wasn’t really a surprise but it still hurt.   Will Tomasi continue to abuse or ignore any Lois?  Hopefully he will allow PF Lois still to be Author X as well as a wife and mother.

Mr. Oz , remember him from Johns’ run on Superman?   He also states that PF Superman is not who he thinks he is either.  Hmmmm.  Good mystery here.

Superman Rebirth #1 came out June 1st.  Tomasi is still on probation with me.  He’s going to have to prove his Superman book is worth reading.

TIARA IS DEAD, LONG LIVE DIANA!

Geoff Johns asked Greg Rucka to come back to DC to write Wonder Woman.

Wonder Woman became Tiara to us.  She had multiple personalities and constantly was drawing her sword.  In Wonder Woman Rebirth #1 written by Rucka, we get a tweaking of her new 52 story — and be prepared for more as Rucka has two stories going each month (Wonder Woman is being published twice a month as are other books).  One is called LIES – which is very appropriate to what happened to her in the new 52 and the other is called YEAR ONE – establishing her true first year.

Wonder Woman came out June 8th and if you LOVE Wonder Woman, you have to buy this book.

ACTION COMICS #957

Yes, Action Comics has gone back to its former numbering.  (A bit arrogant to take it to #1 — not to mention stupid.)

Dan Jurgens has the writing honors while Patrick Zircher is on art.  Jurgens wrote Superman Convergence and the Superman: Lois and Clark series during the new 52 era.  Both must reads/buys.

Action Comics #957 is the official rebirth of Superman to DC Comics, in my opinion.  If you were curious about where that splashpage at the top of this post came from — it’s Action Comics #957.  If you love Superman, Metropolis, Lex Luthor, Lois Lane, Jimmy Olsen, Perry White and Clark Kent – you’re gonna go INSANE for this book.  It has everything you’ve been missing in the new 52.

Several storylines going on at once – mystery, love, character building, and just Superman mythology goodness. Dive right in.  Enjoy!

Rebirth, in general

Geoff’s final book for a while was DCU Rebirth #1.  He has about a dozen films coming out over the next few years, not to mention several televisions shows.

Speaking of which — if you are not a fan of Laurel being killed off Arrow — go get Green Arrow Rebirth #1.  Black Canary will also be featured in that book.  Johns, as the captain of this new comic’s ship, definitely is bringing back the love.

Flash Rebirth #1 is somewhat of a sequel of DCU Rebirth #1.  We see part of that story from a different point of view.  Iris West and Barry Allen are dating.  Do you need to know anything else to go buy the book?  Also, Barry (and Batman) will be investigating what happened to the DCU.

If you enjoyed Johns run on Aquaman, be sure to get Aquaman Rebirth #1.  You’ll be glad you did.

Also if you’re a Teen Titans fan, Titans Rebirth #1 will be out June 15th.  You’ll see some ‘new’ *cough* old characters and Nightwing is back in blue.

New 52 Lois will have her own series beginning in August.  SUPERWOMAN    Written by Phil JimenezWould love to see her meet the PF folks.

Jon Kent (White) has a series coming out in September.  He and Damian Wayne will be in SUPERSONS.  Can’t wait for this baby World’s Finest.

Looks like there will a whole lot of Superman going on from now on.  We have a dead Superman, a Pre-Flashpoint Superman (or is he?), a Superwoman (new 52 Lois Lane), new 52 Lex wearing the S-shield, a Chinese Superman, Supergirl, Supersons, and a Pre-Flashpoint Lois Lane aka Author X.  Action and Superman books come out twice monthly.

The new/old character said someone had stole 10 years of their lives.  That would be the new 52.  Action Comics, 5 year gap, rest of number #1s.  Superman is the foundation of any DCU – and if you maim Superman, YOU fail — DCE did fail.  Now Johns is giving Superman and the rest of the DCU a REBIRTH!

Thanks to Geoff Johns, DCE is making a concerted effort to give us back our characters.  Full lives, loves, missions, honor, and hope inspiring.  Rebirth books are now $2.99.

Now if only Diamond distributors would just quit damaging the goods, maybe we could all enjoy our DCU comics again!  Go buy digital – they count too!

PS

The reason I said it “may be” time to return is  — the same people who were in charge of the new 52 ideas are still in charge.  Johns is going to concentrate on film and television – but lets hope he checks in from time to time to make sure this Rebirth isn’t sabotaged.  He’s brought in some good people to care for these characters.  Let’s hope the people in charge allows that to continue.

SUPERMAN???

supermannomorebig

You won’t be seeing this guy anytime soon if at all ever.

In its quest to show Superman is unrelatable to a modern audience, DC Entertainment continues tearing the character apart. And you thought the new 52 was bad? DCYOU is Superman destruction in hyperdrive.

Since Superman is known in every HOUSEHOLD around the globe, the DCYOU version would be unrecognizable to the ‘man on the street’ (that would include males from 14 to 34 years old, DC Entertainment, just saying).

Anyone who was born since 1938 (and some folks before) knows these aspects of Superman:

THE CAPE: His indestructible baby blanket cape has ripped. Yes, an indestructible thing ripped. Why did it rip? So he can protect his now powerless hands.

S-SHIELD: Yes, he has one. BUT, in the new 52 his S-shield formulated his majestic collared, biological Kryptonian armor. (Because y’know, Martha Kent wasn’t worthy enough to even assist in making one.) In the DCYOU, the S-shield apparently only had enough power to create jeans, t-shirt, and workboots before it was taken away by the Fortress of Solitude. (Don’t worry the Fortress of Solitude was taken away, too.) Now he apparently gets his S t-shirts from Target/Walmart/K-Mart or Superheroes Discount. See more information regarding the supersuit under POWERS.

SPITCURL: Gone since the new 52 along with the red trunks.  Superman always had great hair, but not anymore.  He’s got a buzzcut which he does not use his heat vision to trim.

FLYING: Yes, I know Richard Donner proved a man could fly but DC Entertainment seems determined to prove that premise wrong. ‘Superman’ no longer flies or leaps tall buildings. His addiction to a new power has rendered him powerless. Yes DCYOU Superman has an addictive personality now. His strong will died at the birth of the new 52.

POWERS: He has none. Nope, not even electrical powers. His most important power was using his heart first to make decisions but that was sacrificed in the new 52.  His powerlessness makes him dependent on Batman to pick him up naked (don’t know what happened to indestructible cape) so Alfred could make him new costumeS (plural). (Alfred is worthy, Martha Kent is not.)

CLARK KENT: Nope. He’s currently without identity. He’s a man without a name. Clark Kent was a non-entity in the new 52. Superman was/is a battling alien without human tethers. And Clark Kent ‘died’ in Batman/Superman Annual 2. As to Jonathan and Martha Kent, they died. (no human tethers) The new 52 Superman acted as if he didn’t learn anything during his 18 years with them. Superman had to bury them twice. First, their UNTIMELY deaths by 5th dimensional character, Lord Vyndyktvx and the second, when they were zombies via the Ultrahumanite.

DAILY PLANET: Clark left the Daily Planet after he started dating Wonder Woman. (Remember, no human tethers). Supposedly started a blog with Cat Grant where he wrote less than 3 articles. Geoff Johns (Richard Donner’s former assistance and now Chief Creative Office for DCE) tried to bring Clark back to the DP, but that was just a blip on the radar which immediately faded for the DCYOU.

METROPOLIS: Not so much. Not when he has to hang with the Justice League (remember, no human tethers). DCYOU Superman is now spreading his vigilantism to Gotham, too. He can’t fly so I guess the rest of the world that can’t be reached by a motorcycle full of gas is safe.

LOIS LANE: Is seen ever so slightly more than Clark Kent, but she is restricted by so many laws. DC Entertainment’s law of supers with supers – she’s not a super so she can’t be with Clark/Superman. (But if he’s powerless & more or less nameless how can he still be dating Wonder Woman? It’s not Lois, so it’s okay to break the rule.) Lois is dating another guy who is rarely seen and makes Superman so despondent. (Clark hasn’t liked any kind of challenge since the new 52 began.) The reason for the boyfriend, 5 years of story that readers have never seen so Superman could date Wonder Woman. Recently Peter Tomasi writer (and also an editor at DCE) has Wonder Woman wanting to be a reporter along side Clark. Then there’s the anyone-but-Lois law fans are VERY familiar with. Lois Lane is not allowed to be in Action Comics (yes, the book that launched everything and the superhero genre, too) since Greg Pak took over (don’t blame Greg, it’s editorial’s fault). Pak has Lana Lang filling the pages of Action. With DCYOU he will not only be adding Jimmy Olsen but a new female character with the initials LL (not Lois, remember the law) who will be a friend to Superman and play an important role. Lois will appear in the Superman book, written by newcomer Gene Luen Yang, but she’s been introduced in the DCYOU as a backstabbing betrayer of Superman’s dual identity (rarely seen) which makes him lose everything. Previous to all this, DCE actually had a Lois Lane solo book but deemed it not worthy of a PR team to promote it. So when we say Lois is a non-entity, we mean DCE is getting rid of her. How do you introduce a beloved character as the purveyor of so much destruction when she has always been THE ONE to believe in the Man of Steel? How does DCE turn that around? They don’t. They haven’t. And they obviously don’t want to.

FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE: Gone. Recently rebuilt because Wonder Woman imploded the Phantom Zone. The FOS is running on all cylinders brainwise. It recognizes this ‘new’ Superman is a phony and takes the indestructible cape (most of it) and the biological S-shield. DCE says the FOS made Superman’s life too easy and too comfortable. This is reminiscent of their statements regarding Lois Lane at the new 52 launch. She was a beautiful trophy wife who made Superman’s life perfect. So now he has a beautiful trophy super girlfriend – what’s the difference? (not Lois so is okay) And Superman’s life is never perfect if you actually deal with his dual identity and his love of humanity, but DCE hasn’t wanted to go there.

Introducing DCYOU Superman:  He rides a Tossr motorcycle which he uses as a weapon while wearing ripped cape remnants on his hands. Wears an S t-shirt, jeans and workboots he bought at the store. He’s basically a vigilante without the Superman status. He could be a nutjob who has convinced himself he’s Superman. But then wouldn’t he be wrapping a red blanket around his neck and jumping off garage roofs? So if you want your Superman to be a Marvel character, this is the guy for you. (Marvel would probably respect the character more than DC Entertainment has the last 5 years.) Where’d he get the motorcycle – he’s the Man of Steal now.

If you’re already a Superman fan, don’t worry this character is not meant for you. DCE is looking for future readers. (much like their new reader hunt. Loyal readers were 98%) Future readers are children, right? WRONG. Kids get the real Superman – all the things DCE has taken from him and the red trunks, too. So what are future readers? An early online survey of the new 52 in 2011 revealed that 23% of their readership was female. That would be about 1 out of 4 readers. DCE execs were wondering why women were more comfortable with online surveys. Even this small percentage of females was too large for the target audience DCE announced they were going for – 14 to 34 year old males. A few years later a survey revealed that their audience was 47% female. Doubled. (almost female to male equality) This occurred when DCE was still shooting for that male target audience. DCE gave 18 million dollars to a company who had a target audience of 18 to 34 year old males so they could make videos for them. DCE has acknowledged their audience has changed but do they like that idea? Perhaps their target audience is allergic to online surveys – is that what DCE wants everyone to believe? (even at 53 to 67% responses from males) Or is it more likely, especially with Superman’s abysmal order numbers, males a running away in droves to await the next lightswitch crisis before they spend their money. And DCE has made their Superman as un-female friendly as possible. New 52 superdouche, anyone?

Future readers appear to be the same ole target audience they’ve been focusing on. But blaming 14 to 34 year old males who don’t read comics yet does them a disservice. How do DCE execs know what these potential readers want? How did they know what the new readers (a mere 2%) wanted? They didn’t. It was what the DCE executives wanted. So Nielsen and Diane Nelson can survey till they are blue in the face if the boyz at the top don’t want Superman to rise from the ashes of his order numbers. A phenomenon DCE execs created.

How much better would Superman stories/orders be if DCE execs even considered males and females like all the things they have taken away from the character. Superman’s mythology.

DCYOU/Divergence is breaking the chains of Superman’s mythology.  So DCYOU Superman is Superman unhinged – not really Superman in any reality.

Fans do not care if DC Entertainment doesn’t like or understand Superman. At this point, it appears DCE execs/editorial despise the character and all he means to his fans. As businessmen (yea, they are mostly males), they need to buck up and give the people what they want. Meaning make some money with this character without these ridiculous restrictions on his mythology.  Isn’t that what business is about?  Making money.  Does Lee/Harras/Didio want to be known as the destroyers of Superman? We shall see, won’t we.

Remember the rule: IF you don’t like it, don’t buy it. The only way to change things is to take a stand and let your voice be heard. Vote with your purchases (or lack thereof).

Let’s not allow the real Superman to go down without a fight or protest from his FANS!

P.S.  Don’t worry Batman fans, your hero gets to keep everything.  He’s still the billionaire playboy with a manor, a batcave, batmobile, batplane, etc., utility belt, cowl, Alfred, 5 Robins, and still fighting in Gotham City,  Plus Joker is immortal and Batman becomes a god in the Darkseid War.  No regressions for him.  Is it any wonder Batman sells 200 to 400% more books than any Superman book?  He gets to keep ALL of his mythology plus given even more added abilities.

THE HOAX

“All is not what it seems.”
Skew your view.
I once was blind, but now I see.
Wake UP!

hoax

These panels (click to enlarge) are from Batman/Superman #18 and were the guidestones to a revelation.

The fauxmance (monikered by Christine of G2Factor) is a hoax.

I’ll wait until the tittering and the sad “oh, you poor deluded thing” faces subside. Hear me out.

I’ve been wrong before and I’m not afraid to be wrong again. Dangerous, right?

Why would the fauxmance be a hoax?

Because the new 52 is the anti-life equation. Hey, just enjoy the ride.

Here is the anti-life equation (pre-52):

loneliness + alienation + fear + despair + self-worth
÷ mockery ÷ condemnation ÷ misunderstanding
× guilt × shame × failure × judgment
n=y where y=hope and n=folly,
love=lies, life=death, self=dark side

Isn’t that what our heroes and we readers have been living through the past three plus years?

How would that happen? It has to do with the timeline of the new 52. How the stories were presented.

First, Action Comics occurred 6 months before Justilce League #1 in the stories.
Second, Justice League #1-6, occurred five years before all the other #1s (which includes Superman #1)
Superman books and Justice League were the only books to have a five year gap. Why? To pull off the scam. The hoax. The ruse.

In the first six books of Justice League, we have the ‘formation’ of the team and their first battle is with Darkseid. Justice League War, the animation, is loosely based on this. Did Darkseid truly lose that battle, especially since the other #1 book heroes weren’t quite what they once were pre-52. Dark-dark-dark, gritty, cosmic and epic. No hope. Battle-battle-battle.

One thing different in the new 52 is Cyborg being on the Justice League. He now has Apokoliptian technology. Why? So he can boom tube the team around? How’s that every 1000th trip or so landing on Apokolips working for everybody? So Cyborg either consciously or unconsciously has a connection to Darkseid. Victor has global surveillance capabilities. Talk about no privacy! And as every Superman fan knows, Clark has secrets (dual identities and lives).

I’m a Superman fan. And part of being fans of something is that we get into this frame of mind sometimes thinking that the-powers-that-be just don’t know what they are doing. And if TPTB are very clever, they prove us wrong. I have commented that the new 52 is not very clever – but if they can pull off this hoax and turn things around, I’ll give them a nod to their cleverness. And MAYBE consider forgiving them. Or I could be just giving them more credit than they deserve. Time will tell.

So if Darkseid didn’t lose the intellectual/emotional battle and Cyborg can be used as an Apokoliptian pawn, then how are our heroes ever going to protect the ones they love? By making the world think that the Justice League is their only life. In Superman’s case, battling alien, no human tethers, dead human parents, etc.

The five year gap is an insurance policy, a safety net, especially in the Superman books. Once the flagship character of the DCU, his stories are now tied to the new flagship, Justice League. And to be quite frank, the new 52 Justice League flagship is like the Exxon Valdez. There have been delays in getting events to occur probably due to creators leaving midvoyage, books being canceled and Trinity War having eighteen months of hype which produced a fizzle into Forever Evil. Gee, just what readers and heroes under the anti-life equation needed, more evil. This effected readership greatly. Fans have left in droves. Action Comics is now under the 40,000 watermark AGAIN! Time for all to be revealed.

Sometime during the five year gap (between JL 6 & 7) someone came up with a plan (probably Bats) so the Justice League could still have secrets from the world and Darkseid (via Cyborg). Superman has always been on Darkseid’s radar. In JL 5 years previous, he is captured by DeSaad to make a clone army to find Darkseid’s daughter (giant plotline nugget just dropped?? Doubt it.) Earth 2 Superman in the new 52 also suffered clonng at the hands of DeSaad and recently sacrificed himself to save the world. (Earth 2 Superman was the better Superman in the new 52 even though we didn’t get to see him much.)

Wonder Woman and Steve Trevor’s relationship (one of the best things about Justice League) was very public. Clark likes his private life secret. So in order to protect the ones they love and to convince the world they only have lives being superheroes, the fauxmance was created.

Action #0 which came out a month after JL#12 in real time but occurred before Action #1 in storytime, has Clark Kent in love with Lois Lane’s writing and she admires his blog. Lois still gets to name Superman. General Lane knows there’s something going on with those two even if it’s a deep admiration thang. Readers don’t know what happened in the five year gap.  I have always contended TPTB would never be able to convince anyone that the fauxmance was real if there was ever a hint of Superman/Clark and Lois Lane’s relationship. Thus the safety net.

In the Justice League War animation, reviewers said the fauxmance sounded forced, and it read like that in the books as well. Let’s investigate.

Wonder Woman is sitting atop the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, DC, USA’s Capitol. Why? Because it’s Grecian architecture? It is one of the most technologically protected spots on the Earth. VERY PUBLIC. Superman joins her and they have this conversation about loneliness and secrets and protecting people. She’s just dumped her boyfriend, Steve Trevor, for the second time after he saved the Justice League’s ass from David Graves and his lesser gods. (whatever happened to that guy?) And she also fires him as the Justice League liaison minutes before sitting on the memorial. Perhaps the reason this not-so-romantic conversation seemed so forced is because Superman and Wonder Woman are just bad actors. The big question remains why were they doing this? Editorial mandate only? There had to be some story value especially with a huge gaping hole of five years involved.

another identity
In Action 10 which could have occurred before this scene since it it was in the previous 5 year timeline, it was revealed Clark was a reporter – Cyborg and Wonder Woman were present.

secrets from everyone

alone

So if Superman’s secret identity was revealed in the five years previously, then who benefited from knowing he was Clark Kent that night he was on top of the Lincoln Memorial? Who needed to know he had to keep secrets and he was lonely? Clark quit the Daily Planet shortly after this. Was it to protect Lois? And Cat Grant came up with the idea of the blog which Clark rarely wrote for – was it to protect her also? If he was only identified as Superman, what purpose would that serve? It was a ruse to keep Darkseid off the scent of his true life. Plus by playing the loneliness, alienation and fear card, Darkseid would think his anti-life equation was working perfectly. Wonder Woman and the fauxmance are just a decoy in order to protect Lois and Superman’s life as Clark Kent.

In Action 12, a must for any Superman fan, we see how Clark’s original timeline went. He left the Kents alive in Smallville to join the Daily Planet (not the Daily Star) in Metropolis. He meets Lois Lane. This book came out the same month as JL12 and is in the five years previous timeline.

action12first

action12

See how he fights the parademons with the Justice League and then marries Lois Lane. This all happened before Lord Vyndyktvx changed everything. Before Lord V killed his parents, before Clark ended up at the Daily Star, and before the fauxmance/hoax may or may not have happened.

In Justice League International Annual #1 which also came out the same DAY as JL12 and was in the ‘present’ timeline, we get to see Booster Gold react to the fauxmance the same way we did.

boosterwth

Booster from the Future told present day Booster, Superman and Wonder Woman needed to be stopped. Yes, please. The fauxmance was on all the monitors/live cams at JLI headquarters so it was a very public display. Clark is a very private person so had he changed so much in the new 52? DCE kept trying to sell (shove into any one of our orifices) the fauxmance idea. Superman didn’t act like Superman. His strong will seemed to have disappeared. Why? He didn’t know who he was half the time. Didn’t know his own mind and heart as he was constantly bombarded with villains who attacked emotionally and psychologically. He also had multiple timelines, alternate realities, visited alternate universes. No reader could truly get a bead on the character or who he was. And there was the abyss of the five year gap – missing stories, missing character building, etc.

I asked my cohost of G2Factor’s HARDCORE if all the fauxmance snoggings were public. Tej researched and found the answer was YES. There has been no private kissy kissy. What does this mean? The fauxmance is a sham. It is for the world’s and Darkseid’s benefit. Readers have been punk’d royally by DC editorial.

Lois didn’t lie about the secret romance.

We’ve seen Lois talk about the other side of the moon before in the new 52. Superman Annual #2, drawn by Dan Jurgens. “His cape has kept me warm on the dark side of the moon.” Is there Clois hanky panky going on the far side of the moon out of the detection of Cyborg and Darkseid? Note: this also was the issue fans saw Superman hold Lois Lane in his arms for the FIRST TIME. (Thanks again to Tej for the research.)

darkside of moon

Another thing, if Clark and Lois can keep it secret from Batman, then Cyborg and Darkseid haven’t got a chance.

secret from bats

The Kandorians or whomever is controlling the Kandorians obviously believed the fauxmance hype. That’s why they shot Batman. Kara didn’t even know & stil doesn’t since Lois tried to cover up the secret romance while they were taking the ‘bullet’ out of Bruce.

Batman/Superman 18 also held another first. Superman screaming Lois Lane’s name as he tries to save her. A monumental moment for fans.

bs18LOIS

Next time you pick up a Superman story in the new 52, keep this in the back of your mind. The Superman/Wonder Woman ‘romantic’ relationship is a hoax. Some of it will start to make sense.

I would encourage Clois fans to post on tumblr and/or twitter examples of the new 52 secret romance, because they are out there. Too many to show in this particular blogpost.

One thing bothers me. Wonder Woman may be starting to believe the lie. I say that because what would make Brian Azzarello pitch for Wonder Woman after he heard what DC editorial was going to do to her character. Wonder Woman has been a train wreck in the new 52 (less so in Azz’s book). But there are examples that DC editorial may be contemplating a giant continuous catfight. Citing Justice League 13 “It was a kiss, not a commitment,” said by Superman. Also, Wonder Woman’s perspective boxes during the Zod & Faora fight in the fauxmance book. “After the last battle.” Even in Throne of Atlantis which is loosely based on the Justice League arc of the same name. Lois Lane is saved by Wonder Woman (never happened in the books) and she says, “I wouldn’t want to be on her bad side.” Let’s hope things have changed and we won’t get an insipid catfight.

This summer is the Darkseid War. Will the veil be lifted and all revealed?

Meanwhile I’m sitting in my happy space with hope – and that’s all a Superman fan requires. Hope.

Don’t stop believing.

Besides . . . Convergence!

SUPERMAN: DOES HE AGE?

So I’ve been trying to figure out what the new 52 is about — at least as far as Superman is concerned.

He’s not with Lois because she’s human. (That decision must be in the five year gap between Action & Superman books because we haven’t seen it in the story.  Besides that is stinking thinking just to get the fauxmance off the ground.)  He’s with Wonder Woman because she’s a demigoddess.  Diana thinks he will live forever with her after the last battle.  But Superman’s story is the neverending battle (well, at least when he was with Lois).

Scott Snyder thinks Superman ages differently than humans because he’s a solar battery and is invulnerable under a yellow sun.  How does that theory work?

The Golden Age seemed to think that Superman aged like us, but then with the advent of the Silver Age and subsequent eras, superheroes were pretty much frozen in their thirties.

So let’s examine this theory that Superman ages differently than humans.  What kind of science/logic is this?

Did he age in this unique manner as soon as he hit Earth’s atmosphere?  The Kents found him as an infant.  Or did it evolve when he was in puberty?  Okay, we already have a problem here.  How much does he age in ratio to humans?

Does he only age six months out of every twelve?  If so & it started when he was an infant, then he stayed a baby for a very long time.  And puberty would have taken him twice as long to reach.

Maybe that ratio is too drastic. Let’s look at a less ‘obvious’ ratio.  What if he only aged 11 months out of every 12 compared to humans?  So he would grow & age pretty much like humans.  But every 11 years he’d appear at least a year younger.  At age 12, he’d only age to 11.  At age 22, he’d only age to 20.  At age 33, he’d only age to 30.  Not so drastic.  So why couldn’t he spend his life with a human?  And why would the demi-goddess think he was immortal enough to live with her forever?

If we take the every six months ratio, radical and ridiculous as it is, that would mean, he’d be 36 but appear to be 18. Then how does that explain his immaturity in the new 52 when he first came to Metropolis. Later, when he was ’25’, according to Scott Lobdell, he still hadn’t developed any maturity regarding his powers, his ’50’ year old life, etc.

Not to mention, but I will, how could Clark attend elementary school through high school with any regularity if he only appeared half the age of his classmates?

Okay, so if it didn’t start until he reached puberty (13) as perhaps most of his powers did, then by the time he was 18, he’d appear 15.5 years old.  Again not much difference.  By the time he was actually 30 years old, he’d only appear 21.5 years old. So the disguising his age would have to start probably about the actual age of 21 (appearing 17).  Superman must be a proficient actor 24/7 in order to ‘pull off’ looking 30 when he only appears 21.5 years old.  True, actor Tom Welling played a 14 year old Clark Kent when he was 24, but we highly suspect he’s Kryptonian with his extreme good looks – but Welling had his pre-mature graying hair dyed throughout his ten year stent as Superman’s spectacled secret identity.  BUT a Superman in the comics that ages differently would have the opposite problem than the human Welling.  He’d have to appear older if he was living and working with humans on a daily basis.

Maybe that’s why DC Entertainment made him the constant battling alien who can’t relate to humans.  He has an aging secret.  Let’s face it, new 52 Superman should be an actor and not a journalist.  Just think of the career he’d have.  Forever young – or at least for a few generations of humans.  And he’d have to change his name and career every 30 years of so, right?

But is that really Superman or the Superman story?

Siegel and Shuster wrote of an alien who wanted connection to the humans he worked and lived amongst.  He even disguised himself as one of them to relate to them more closely.  And that’s what made the Golden Age so successful.

Keep it simple.  Don’t complicate with theories that can’t be explained with any reasonable accuracy and certainly don’t base Superman’s story on it completely.

Why does it matter how Superman ages if comics usually keeps him frozen at 30 . . . or does a reboot?

The new 52 Superman is a mystery wrapped in an enigma — and when dealing with a character known to generations of humans on this planet, how can that characterization ever sell comic books?  Oh yea, the art.  #utterfail

NO HUMAN SPIRIT

The really disturbing thing for me regarding the fauxmance is that it is in complete denial of the human spirit. Something that the Superman mythology was about. He admired humans for their capacity for hope, but now he just wants to battle with his goddess girlfriend all day and dance the night away while the world (London) is in shambles. We don’t see why he wants to protect Earth. It’s all about snogging Wonder Woman now, who doesn’t understand him wanting to be Clark Kent.

Also having the Kents be dead without Clark recognizing their contribution to his life and giving Lois a cardboard boyfriend truly excised Superman from humanity leaving him only with one ‘persona’ to work out of . . . Kal-El.  “Superman” is no longer influenced by humans.

I was wondering how anyone would consider this idea as being anything but damaging for these icons who were once so beloved by human readers. Both of their mythologies were about love and the human spirit. I got an inkling, as did others, one night on Twitter.

Apparently there is a faction of creators who believe supers should be only with supers. A super is defined as any character with “a cape, a cowl or a codename.” When asked about Clark Kent as a journalist investigating corruption and social Injustice being a hero, it was stated, “He gets paid to do that.” Also human police officers and firemen are not heroes because that’s their job and they get paid to do that.

supeswithheroes

So this picture from the previous era, has no real relevance in the new 52. Since this faction of creators and their mindset have won out — claiming human beings are anything but heroic. The human spirit is dead in the new 52. No super is inspired by them. They’re too busy turning ARGUS (Advanced Research Group Uniting Super-heroes) into a dating service. Non-cape wearing, non-cowl wearing, non-codename toting characters need not apply.

With this attitude towards the human characters who made these icons great, sales orders are falling to dramatic lows for the Superman books. And someone pretty high up, had to force this mindset onto Superman’s mythology in order to produce the new 52 main continuity version of Superman.

Books outside the new 52 main continuity (such as Superman Unchained) do not have this mentality as they are based on Superman’s FULL mythology. Which involved him being inspired by humans and they, in turn, choose to aspire. Hopeful symbiosis.

Also it was stated that supers only with supers was the Marvel way. My son and I’m sure some of you readers are now screaming NO! at the top of you lungs. This is not a Marvel thing. This is a Image/Wildstorm thing. True, Wildstorm creators have worked for both of the big two over the years, but supers with supers was never presented as a mantra at those companies.

So until someone who is outside the supers with supers mentality takes the reins on Superman and also with Wonder Woman, we will still be seeing how the human spirit and inspiration is diminished and disdained.

PS:  Apparently if you’re not into the fauxmance, then you’re just someone who wants the old DC Universe back.  If it means getting Superman back to his FULL mythology — yea, you betcha.  Gimme dat!

Don’t like vivisectioned Superman.

RENAISSANCE MAN NO MORE

MOS120clarkjournoMOS120clarklovesLois

When I was young I didn’t know what a Renaissance man was, but I knew what a Superman was/is/should be.

Superman to me was more than just a brawling alien who fought for Earth and its human inhabitants.  Being the Last Son of Krypton allowed this being to possess all the knowledge of the known galaxies. What does such a man do with all those advantages?  How can mere humans ever hope to relate to him?  How can a reading audience ever trust him to never be corrupted?  The answer is in his origins.  He took on a human identity.

Superman or Superdouche?

THIS:

LoistrustsSupermanSAnn2_2

OR THIS?:

superman27

If you have read Superman #27, you know what I’m talking about.  Scott Lobdell has taken this character and made him into something no superhero should ever even verge on – a complete douche.

Aside from Scott Lobdell not having any idea what Superman is about and that he uses his own personal voice to animate Clark, what else could be going on here – storywise.  I think I’ve discussed the possible political behind-the-scenes machinations quite enough.  Besides, they are moot or will be come this summer.  Oh, there will still be politics and power plays but at least they seem to be turning in favor of Superman fans and their beloved Clark Kent.

Why would Superman, Clark, not trust Lois Lane to keep her mouth shut about his secret?  We know that Lois has had a history of keeping the secret even from Clark.  Why in this instance doesn’t he trust her?

Fauxmance #4 Shall We Mourn?

The minute the fauxmance was announced back in August, 2012, I knew it was a horrendous idea and it would damage the icons involved.  You guys all know this if you’ve been reading this blog.

In order to make this ‘coupling’ work, you have to write these characters out of character.  You have to change something intrinsic to the characters.  Making them younger is no excuse.  People mature in many ways not just chronologically.   With the experience they have had in their lives so far and with the powers they have, they should have developed some maturity, as well as emotional and psychological stability.
